VAT Registration in the UAE: Documents, Timelines & Penalties
Value Added Tax (VAT) registration is a mandatory compliance requirement for businesses operating in the UAE that meet the prescribed threshold under Federal Tax Authority (FTA) regulations. Timely VAT registration is essential to avoid penalties and ensure uninterrupted business operations.
Who Needs to Register for VAT?
Mandatory Registration:
Businesses whose taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in the past 12 months or are expected to exceed this threshold in the next 30 days.
Voluntary Registration:
Businesses with taxable supplies or expenses between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000 may opt for voluntary registration.
Final Date for VAT Registration
Businesses required to register for VAT must submit their VAT registration application within 30 days from the date they become liable (i.e., the date the taxable turnover threshold is exceeded).
Failure to register within this timeframe will result in penalties imposed by the FTA.
Penalty for Late VAT Registration
Late VAT Registration Penalty: AED 10,000
Documents Required for VAT Registration
– Valid UAE Trade License
– Passport and Emirates ID of owners/partners/authorized signatories
– Company contact details (registered address, email, phone)
– Bank account details (IBAN or bank confirmation letter)
– Memorandum of Association (MOA), where applicable
– Business activity details and nature of taxable supplies
– Turnover evidence (sales invoices, contracts, or financial statements)
– Customs registration details, if involved in import/export
VAT Registration Timeline
VAT registration applications are typically reviewed within 5 to 20 working days, subject to document completeness and FTA clarification requests.
Upon approval, the business will receive a Tax Registration Number (TRN) and VAT Certificate.
The FTA will confirm the effective date of VAT registration, which may be retrospective.
Why Timely VAT Registration Is Important
Delayed or incorrect VAT registration may result in monetary penalties, backdated VAT liabilities, and compliance issues during audits.
Timely registration allows businesses to legally charge VAT, recover eligible input VAT, and file VAT returns accurately.
